In September 2013, M-City, the alias of Polish artist Mariusz Waras, redefined the limits of urban art by transforming the Stavanger Air Traffic Control Centre’s control tower at Sola Airport, Norway, into a stunning canvas. Over six days, he adorned the 600 square meter tower with his distinctive post-industrial stencil work, pioneering the world’s first large-scale mural of its kind on an airport control tower.
Monumental Post-Industrial Masterpiece
The monumental artwork featured a captivating blend of post-industrial elements meticulously depicted through intricate black and white stencils against a backdrop of various blues. M-City’s attention to detail brought to life the inner workings of machinery, presenting a fusion of urban imagery inspired by factories, chimneys, and cranes, reminiscent of his Eastern European upbringing.
Perspectives from All Angles
The transformative mural enveloped all sides of the control tower, providing viewers with diverse perspectives from every angle. M-City’s artistry allowed each observer to experience a unique vantage point, exploring the intricacies of his complex creation.
Pioneering Urban Interventions
Renowned for his large-scale industrial-themed murals, M-City crafted this innovative artwork by combining hundreds of hand-cut stencils, a signature style that has defined his urban interventions. His works, marked by intricate black and white compositions with splashes of color, continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
